Like many other guitarists, Jake Lovelace spent his first 7 years teaching himself the instrument.
Haphazardly putting together his own YouTube curriculum and following various online methods that promised “guaranteed” success in just 3 simple steps.
This resulted in some pretty significant gaps in his playing and musical knowledge.
He relied on memorization as opposed to conceptual and practical fretwork fluency which left him always feeling a bit lost.
The fretboard seemed abstract and confusing.
Jake’s enthusiasm, his work ethic, and diligence coupled with a systematic approach to the structures we have in place like the daily practice management helped keep him accountable and gave him a solid conceptual grasp of how the fretboard works.
His commitment paid off.
Just look at this video he made after just 12 weeks of working with us.
With the support of his mentor, Curt Henderson Jake was able to define and ultimately achieve the goal of playing “less intellectually” and “more viscerally”... hearing an idea, executing it, and playing it from the heart.
In addition to the technical work he was already doing with the GMI content Curt offered a ton of supplementary material all of which Jake was able to take on and as a result, each week progressed leaps and bounds forward in all areas.
Here’s Curt speaking about his time with Jake during their 3-months together.
Jake’s attention to detail and his ability to consistently show up and commit to the work was no small feat.
He utilized the tools we offer, showed up with consistency and reaped the rewards of a well thought out practice plan, consistent action and the accountability of a mentor.
Ultimately, we see our relationship with our students as a partnership, we can provide a phenomenal container for growth, the crystal clear path, and the framework necessary to excel, but it's on the student to show up, put in the work and receive the benefits.
We believe it's possible for any student to achieve the kind of progress that Jake saw in his time with us.
If you feel inspired by Jake’s s story, and you're ready to push yourself to new heights on the instrument, consider applying to our next cohort.
Grace Rolland has been playing since the age of 12 and came to us with a deep desire to move forward in her skill as a musician.
She had grown tired of always relying on the same "fall back" positions to the guitar and was looking for a clear, structured approach to deepen her understanding of the instrument.
